Hello West AfricaTransforming how travelers experience Francophone West Africa
Through small-group tours, community collaboration, and research-backed design, we make Benin accessible to travelers who value comfort, authenticity, and purpose.
Hello West Africa exists to transform how
travelers understand themselves, their assumptions, and the world…
through immersion in the fullness of Beninese life.
The only professionally guided, fully English-language immersive cultural tour of Benin.
Designed for curious, educated travelers who want to understand the world, not just see it.
The Place
Benin, West Africa, is the birthplace of Vodun, the seat of the Dahomey Kingdom, and one of the world's most extraordinary repositories of living cultural heritage.
It is also one of the least-visited countries on Earth. Not because it lacks significance, but because access has never existed for English-speaking travelers.
Hello West Africa changes that.
Hello West Africa is led by two founders whose expertise, credentials, and personal history in Benin are the business itself.
Dr. Debra Kouda and Thomas D'Aquin Kouda are both Beninese American, partners in life and in this work. Thomas was born and raised in Benin. Debra first came to Benin in 2007 as a Peace Corps volunteer and has called it home ever since.
Between them, they bring 17 years of lived experience and community relationships in the villages, markets, and families that guests encounter on every tour. Alongside is Dr. Kouda's BRIDGE Framework, developed from her doctoral research in transformative learning, which structures every experience from preparation through post-trip integration.
We do not curate a spectacle of Benin for outside observers. We create conditions for genuine exchange between travelers and the communities they visit.
Who We Are
The Experience
The centerpiece of every Hello West Africa experience is our privately owned family property in the village of Kabole, about 20 minutes north of Dassa-Zoumé. Guests stay on-site in comfortable bungalows, share meals with community members, and engage with artists, elders, and families.
This is not proximity to culture. It is residence within it.
The 12-Day Immersive Tour
Our flagship. Small-group journeys through Benin's cities, villages, and cultural sites, led personally by both co-founders on every departure. Limited to 6–8 travelers. Structured by the BRIDGE Framework before, during, and after the trip.
First tour date TBD.
Private & Family Tours
Custom itineraries for families, couples, and private groups who want a more personalized experience. Flexible pacing, family-inclusive pricing, and the same depth of access.
Kabole Short Stay
Kabole is also available as a stand-alone destination. Book the property as a peaceful village retreat, ideal for those who want to experience rural Benin at their own pace, without a full guided tour.
What Makes Us Different
👥 Founder-led guidance — Both co-founders guide every tour, start to finish.
🏡 Owned property, not rented access — We own the land, the bungalows, and the community relationships that make the experience possible. Every other operator in this space rents their way in. We own our foundation.
🧑🧑🧒🧒 Small groups — 6-8 travelers, kept small by design.
📖 Preparation and reflection — Support before, during, and after your journey
💭 Knowledge exchanges — Professionally matched, facilitated conversations between guests and Beninese counterparts in parallel fields. No other operator in West Africa offers anything like it.
🗣️ English-friendly in Francophone West Africa — We remove the language barrier entirely, so international travelers can engage fully and never feel like they're missing the conversation.
Building Hello West Africa Together
A Partnership Opportunity in Transformational Tourism
The property exists. The community relationships exist.
We have been cultivating the foundation
of this incredible experience for over 15 years.
What we are building now is the infrastructure that makes it scalable. The bungalows that house our guests, the vehicle that transports them safely, and the systems that enable us to welcome six groups a year (or more).
We're looking for partners who want to build this with us.
Between Here and Benin
Stories from inside Benin.
Culture, community, daily life, and what it really means to build something real in West Africa.
Written by Debra from between two continents.
